Traveling thorough Europe a number of years ago, Katie found many obvious and surface differences between it and her native U.S. The century-old buildings, tired and worn, provided the onlooker with a story that was older than anything she had seen before. Katie began to see that this story, although was being told through the cracks of their awnings and the moss that grew from their eves, was embodied in such a powerful way in their doorbells. She felt a desire to capture what she could and share it with others though her passion for photography.

The doorbells seem to embody a chorus of all the visitors those buildings had seen, the wear on their frames and surfaces, the layers of paint- each of which showing another owner and another tale. She loved how beautiful they could be as a necessary element of function, all in such a distinct way. Each doorbell had such a different story to tell and Katie became interested in hearing all that she could; the unlimited potential peeked her curiosity and her imagination ran wild with every battered and worn doorbell she came across.

She began taking photos of them to try and convey this story in the only way that seemed appropriate, the only way the doorbells themselves knew how; she felt in this way she was letting them speak for themselves and she hoped whomever saw them would be willing to listen.
